The expansion of digital technology and Internet access not only has amplified opportunities and lowered the cost of longitudinal data collection, but also allows new insights about nonresponse behavior. U.S. survey response rates have been falling due to widespread use of call filtering and call answering systems that permit prospective respondents to screen telephonic solicitations and evade recruitment. Most research is based on adults, yet mobile technologies are well aligned with teens’ media habits. Using a year-long diary study that used a mobile-optimized web app to administer 25 bi-weekly diaries to adolescents recruited from a birth cohort, we identify several aspects of recruitment experiences and respondent social circumstances that optimize longitudinal compliance.
