Housing is the most valuable asset for many households in nearly all capitalist societies. The down payment and mortgage require substantial savings and a good earning potential in the future, and higher education is a good predicator of future earning potential. However, with the high education expansion, to what extent college education can facilitate the transition of housing ownership becomes less clear. Against this backdrop, we situate our context in Hong Kong, one of the most expensive city for living in the world, to examine the relationship between college education and young adults’ home ownership over more than two decades’ period. Using census data and cross-classified multilevel models (CCMM), we show that there are significant period and cohort effects on transition to home ownership among young adults in Hong Kong. The college advantage on housing ownership is in decline among the more recent cohorts. We also find a significant gender difference in this relationship, implying the marry-up effect of females on the transition to the home ownership.
