摘要：Previous research on the sources of foreign policy convergence has exclusively focused on changes either at the dyadic level between sender and receiver countries or at the monadic level of these states. Although such approaches are helpful to understand how states affect foreign policy change in other countries, they have generally ignored the third source of foreign policy convergence, that is, the indirect impact of significant events from neighboring countries. This paper examines how one of the major diplomatic phenomena---leadership visits---can affect foreign policy convergence within and beyond the receiver countries. We argue that leadership visits not only facilitate foreign policy convergence directly in the receiver country but also produce indirectly favorable diffusion effects in its neighborhood. We develop an original dataset that tracks high-level officials’ visits between China and its foreign counterparts from 1978 to 2014. Results from spatial panel models support the proposed direct and indirect effects that Chinese leadership visits are associated with policy convergence in receiver countries and their neighbors.

陈冲，清华大学社会科学学院国际关系学系副教授、清华大学仲英青年学者。2019年获得美国杜克大学政治学博士学位，主要研究兴趣包括国际冲突、内战、政治暴力、冲突管理和对外政策分析等议题。他在《世界经济与政治》、《外交评论》、International Organization, International Peacekeeping, International Studies Quarterly, International Studies Review, The Chinese Journal of International Politics等国内外期刊发表论文20余篇。
