The China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) project aims to document social, economic, population, education, and health changes in China by collecting longitudinal data on individuals, families, and communities. The data collected by the CFPS provides a foundation for academic research and public policy analysis.
Officially launched in 2010, the CFPS has a national representative sample of over 5000 households from 25 provinces in China. Information from these forms the basis for a nationwide and interdisciplinary longitudinal study, tracking both the economic and non-economic welfare of Chinese residents. Areas covered include economic activities, education, family relations and family dynamics, population migration, and health. It is a national, large-scale, multidisciplinary social tracking project. The sample of the CFPS covers 25 provinces/cities/autonomous regions, with a target sample size of 16,000 households, with respondents including all family members in the sample households. In 2008 and 2009 the CFPS conducted initial and follow-up surveys in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangdong provinces respectively. All baseline family members identified by the 2010 baseline survey and their future blood/adoptive children will be the gene members and permanent targets of the CFPS. There are four main types of CFPS questionnaires: community, family, adult, and children's questionnaires. On the basis of this, a variety of questionnaire types for different family members, such as long, short, substitute, and telephone interview questionnaires were developed.
The CFPS is conducted by the Institute of Social Science Survey (ISSS) of Peking University. The project is accessed through computer-aided investigation technology to meet the diverse design requirements, improve access efficiency and guarantee data quality. Project funding is from Peking University 985 project.
