Research shows that gender attitudes influence gender disparities in educational attainment and income. While these studies offer insights into gender inequality, they often draw on data from Western countries, especially the U.S., where series of social changes have created favorable conditions for women’s education and work. Drawing on longitudinal data from Taiwan, this study examines how multidimensional gender attitudes in adolescence are associated with individual adulthood income in a society with traditionally patriarchal but rapidly changing gender norms. Findings reveal that egalitarian gender attitudes may bring both benefits and penalty to individuals. In particular, we identify differential effects of gender role attitudes and gender-career stereotypes on men and women. Women with more egalitarian gender role attitudes have higher income than women with less egalitarian gender role attitudes, while men with weaker gender-career stereotypes have lower income than men with stronger gender-career stereotypes. We further examine possible mediation mechanisms through education attainment, marriage status, and various job characteristics. This study highlights the multidimensional nature of gender attitudes and potential individual consequences of challenging mainstream gender norms.
